Skinny Issue 3 is out now. Pick it up and read. Don't worry about ink on your fingers, it's better than a brain tumour.

Apr 30th, 2008

Hello everybody and welcome to the Skinny online. We are a bi-weekly Vancouver music rag you may, if you are super observant, have seen lying around various establishments in town in its physical incarnation as an actual honest-to-google flesh and blood newspaper. Here we do much of the same thing, with a bit more interactivity and such, and less ink on the fingers. We started the whole deal, cyber and fiber, for the purpose of extolling Vancouver’s terrific music scene because we think it needs it. We are a pleasant and lackadaisical lot, us Vancouverites, not given to trumpeting our virtues or forcing ourselves on anyone. We are the anti-Americans you might say. But in terms of our music scene we take this too far. While Toronto is the centre of music in Canada because…er… because it said so dammit, and Montreal lags not far behind with its burning arcades and various wolves and such, Vancouver always modestly takes its place at the back of the line. This is well nigh criminal when you consider the overflowing abundance, nay, EMBARRASMENT of musical wealth here. Fact of the matter: there are so many freakin goddamn good bands in this town its just stupid. We’d like other people to know about them. Crucial stuff like what fast food joint they prefer on the road. Or who slugged who that time in Albuquerque. You need to know and they need to tell. It is self-evident. It was once said that writing about music is like dancing about architecture, and indeed the whole exercise is a bit absurd. But you like reading about music because it gives you something to do with your eyes and hands while you listen to it. And in this town nobody else is doing it. At least not about music you care about. If Muddle of Pud or Theory of a Nickelfault or whatever they call it is your cup of tea then by all means read the folderol in the Georgia Straight. But if you like GOOD music, CREATIVE music, REAL music, you need to check us out. At this writing we are only a couple issues old. So its hard to say where it might go from here. It might get better, it might get worse. It might get bigger, it might not. All I can say is we’re enjoying ourselves and feeling pretty damn indispensable right about now, let me tell you. So bookmark this site and pick us up when you see us, cause if you’re into Van-made music, you have no choice.
